New Zealand is an energy-rich country and, with energy as a vital input for developed economies, should be well placed to use this this to achieve its economic growth objectives. However, harnessing energy is dependent on the right level of infrastructure being available at the right place, time and price. In New Zealand, responsibility for this infrastructure, and these services, lies with the private sector. This section provides an assessment of how the energy market operates and of whether the market acts in a manner consistent with the objectives of the Government.
